Curriculum
Curriculum Aims
Telford Junior School embraces the National Curriculum as the foundation of its educational provision. Our curriculum incorporates a rich variety of activities, designed to teach Key Stage 2 knowledge, understanding and skills, in a way which engages and inspires the children to learn.
Providing a high-quality learning experience for the children is our primary goal. Lessons are structured so that children are taught at an appropriate and challenging level, taking account of their previous learning. We encourage the children to take an active role in their own learning, by making the purpose of the lesson explicit. Children are given success criteria to help them evaluate the progress they are making in each lesson.
Careful consideration is given by teaching staff to enable all pupils to access lessons and our experienced Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator works with families to ensure that appropriate provision is in place for children with specific learning needs. There is an emphasis on developing the key skills of oral and written communication, application of number, working with information technology, problem solving, working well with others and taking personal responsibility for learning.
Home Learning
Learning activities undertaken at home are designed to help children develop an enthusiasm for learning. In the primary age group, the most effective home learning is where the parent/carer is directly supporting their child. With this support, activities can help:
- To reinforce skills being developed in school.
- To develop research and reference skills.
- To introduce children to the skills of independent study, preparing them for secondary school.
- To nurture self-esteem and a willingness to engage in learning.
We follow the DfE guidelines on the amount of time a child should spend on school activities at home, with reading remaining a central strand of these activities throughout Key Stage 2.
Parents/carers will be able to view home learning activities that are set by teachers via an online link to a portal (Padlets), accessible through this website (see Year Group pages) and provided in the weekly school newsletter.
