Curriculum

Curriculum Aims

Telford Junior School embraces the National Curriculum as the foundation of its educational provision. Our curriculum incorporates a rich variety of activities, designed to teach Key Stage 2 knowledge, understanding and skills, in a way which engages and inspires the children to learn.

Providing a high-quality learning experience for the children is our primary goal. Lessons are structured so that children are taught at an appropriate and challenging level, taking account of their previous learning. We encourage the children to take an active role in their own learning, by making the purpose of the lesson explicit. Children are given success criteria to help them evaluate the progress they are making in each lesson.

Careful consideration is given by teaching staff to enable all pupils to access lessons and our experienced Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator works with families to ensure that appropriate provision is in place for children with specific learning needs. There is an emphasis on developing the key skills of oral and written communication, application of number, working with information technology, problem solving, working well with others and taking personal responsibility for learning.

National Curriculum Subjects

The documents listed below provide an overview of the school's curriculum in each year group, for each subject area. Further information can be found on the Padlets in the Year Group PagesTeachers will be able to answer specific questions you may have about the curriculum during Learning Reviews. Alternatively, you can contact the school to arrange to meet your child's class teacher, if you require further information.

Further information about our curriculum aims and how we put those into practice can be found in our Curriculum Policy.

Swimming

Children undertake swimming lessons as part of their PE curriculum. We ask for a parental contribution towards the cost of these lessons and transportation. We aim for all children to swim competently over a distance of at least 25 metres, looking to develop the strokes of more proficient swimmers. Swimming also provides an additional opportunity for physical activity during the school week, benefiting all children regardless of their skill level.

Religious Education

Religious Education (RE) is not part of the National Curriculum, but schools are required to provide religious education for all pupils. Our RE curriculum promotes tolerance, developing an understanding of different people’s religious beliefs, practices and traditions. Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of the RE curriculum.

Home Learning

Learning activities undertaken at home are designed to help children develop an enthusiasm for learning. In the primary age group, the most effective home learning is where the parent/carer is directly supporting their child. With this support, activities can help:

  •  To reinforce skills being developed in school.
  •  To develop research and reference skills.
  •  To introduce children to the skills of independent study, preparing them for secondary school.
  •  To nurture self-esteem and a willingness to engage in learning.

We follow the DfE guidelines on the amount of time a child should spend on school activities at home, with reading remaining a central strand of these activities throughout Key Stage 2.

Parents/carers will be able to view home learning activities that are set by teachers via an online link to a portal (Padlets), accessible through this website and provided in the weekly school newsletter.

Wider Curriculum

We offer our students a range of other learning opportunities throughout their time at Telford Junior School, such as school trips, workshops and performance events, to enhance our curriculum.

As well as these opportunities, which link to curriculum delivery, we also offer regular extra-curricular activities and clubs for students of all abilities.
