Science

Year 5 Science lesson.
Our Science Curriculum

At Telford Junior School, our Science curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, foster critical thinking, and build a strong foundation of scientific understanding that children can carry with them throughout their lives.  We believe that teaching and learning in science are most effective when:

  • Children are engaged, challenged and excited about their learning.
  • Children are curious and can ask their own questions.
  • Children work collaboratively and can discuss their ideas.
  • Children explore, plan and carry out their own investigations.
  • Children gain an understanding of wider world and current events.
Our Aims
  • Inspire Curiosity: Encourage students to ask questions about the world around them, exploring natural phenomena and developing a passion for discovery.
  • Foster Scientific Skills: Develop essential scientific skills such as observation, investigation, experimentation, and problem-solving. Students will learn to work scientifically, applying methods to explore hypotheses, collect data, and analyse results.
  • Build Knowledge and Understanding: Provide students with knowledge across key scientific concepts, ensuring they have a solid understanding of all branches of science with key topics building in complexity as children progress through the school.
  • Promote Critical Thinking: Encourage children to evaluate evidence, consider alternative explanations, and develop logical conclusions. They will learn to approach problems from multiple perspectives, developing a growth mindset and resilience in the face of challenges.
  • Promote Environmental Awareness: Raise awareness about the environment, sustainability, and the importance of scientific advancements in addressing global challenges. Students will engage with current issues such as climate change, pollution, and renewable energy.
  • Encourage Collaborative Learning: Foster teamwork and communication skills through group investigations and discussions, where students share ideas, solutions, and insights.
Curriculum Impact
  • Engagement with Science Beyond the Classroom: We hope to inspire students to continue their scientific learning beyond the classroom, encouraging curiosity in everyday life and fostering a love of science that lasts a lifetime.
  • Empowerment of Future Innovators: By building a strong foundation of scientific knowledge and skills, we aim to equip our students with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly scientific and technological world, enabling them to be innovative and critical thinkers in the future.
  • Fostering Environmental Responsibility: We aspire to nurture responsible, environmentally aware citizens who understand the impact of their actions on the planet and are motivated to make informed, sustainable choices.
  • Cultivating Confidence in Scientific Inquiry: We hope every student will feel empowered to ask questions, conduct investigations, and contribute to scientific discussions, instilling confidence in their ability to explore and understand the world around them.
